In the language of the Sioux Indians Dakota means friend. You'll feel like you're dropping in on an old friend when you visit North Dakota. The entire area is steeped in the Native American heritage that has been a part of the land for thousands of years. You will find some natural and man-made attractions that are simply fascinating. Here is a list of the Top Ten Things to do in North Dakota.

10 – The Red River Zoo. In Fargo, North Dakota you'll find the Red River Zoo. While this isn't one of the biggest zoos in the U.S., it is one of the most interesting. There are many exotic animals that even some of the bigger zoos don't have. Your kids will love a day spent at the Red River Zoo.

9 – The National Buffalo Museum. In days long gone by, Buffalo used to roam all over the United States. You probably know the story of how they were almost completely decimated. You can view a museum dedicated to these majestic animals and hear the success story of how their extinction was prevented.

8 – Bully Pulpit Golf Course. On the outskirts of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a great golf course with an unusual name – the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. If you're up for 18 holes, you need to swing by the Bully to get some great play time in.

7 – North Dakota Heritage Center. If you really want to hear about the history of North Dakota and the significance of the Native Americans throughout the state's history, stop by the North Dakota Heritage Center. You will learn a lot and see some wonderful artifacts.

6 – Tommy Turtle. And now for something completely different. That might be what you think when you see Tommy Turtle. This is a local legend; a 30 foot turtle on a snowmobile on the side of the road. While it is not the biggest tourist attraction in North Dakota it is the most unique.

5 – The Medora Musical. If you head to the town of Medora, you'll hear a lot of talk about the Medora Musical. This is an open-air variety show that plays nightly in a local amphitheater. This is another unique experience that you can only have in North Dakota.

4 – The Theodore Roosevelt National Park. In Medora you'll find a huge stretch of gorgeous forest known as the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This park is a wonderful place to spend a few days exploring. You can camp, hike and just enjoy the beautiful scenery.

3 – The Enchanted Highway. You have to travel down the Enchanted Highway if you want to be a seasoned traveler of the U.S. These roadways are unique and mysterious. You'll be amazed by the huge sculptures that hedge in this amazing piece of roadway.

2 – The Dakota Zoo. In Bismark North Dakota you can visit the famous Dakota Zoo. This zoo is close to 90 acres in size and is home to over 600 different animals. You'll love the time you spend at this very special zoo.

1 – West Acres Shopping Center. Get ready to shop til you drop at the West Acres Shopping Center located in Fargo. You may need an extra suitcase for all the great finds you'll discover in this magnificent shopping district.
