Boating and Shipping

A Brief History on Boating and Shipping

Boats and ships are believed to have served as transportation means since ancient times. It is also though that the first ever build type of boat was a logboat and they must have been used in Australia at least 40,000 years ago. However, archaeological excavation revealed that the earliest boats were indeed logboats from approximately 10,000 years ago. One of the oldest boats that were recovered is the canoe of Pesse, a dugout or hollowed tree trunk which is thought to have been constructed in between 8200 and 7600 B.C. The boat can be looked at when visiting the Drents Museum in Assen, The Netherlands. Another boat has been found in Kuwait, a boat that is believed to have sailed over 7,000 years ago and which is made from reeds and tar. Also, boats were found in ancient Egypt, specifically in Sumer and in the Indian Ocean between 4000 B.C and 3000 B.C. Boats and ships played an important role in people’s lives and not only as a mean of transportation but also as a way to sustain life such as with commerce. Commerce by boat is mentioned by historians such as Herodotus, Strabo and Pliny the Elder. They also mention boats as a mean of transportation. There are various examples of merchandisers who used boats to transport their products between the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia. Indus Valley sites have, on the other side, revealed the existence of various models of boats.

Boats were not however useful only in traveling, transportation and commerce. As soon as ancient people have discovered the potential of boats and ships, they have started to use them during wars. That is how the warships first appeared. The Greeks were those who discovered the naval tactics and the way in which boats and ships can be transformed into an advantage and carry the war far from where it can cause great damage. Boating and shipping have therefore become an important part of wars as more and more wars started to be carried on the sea, where the damage was less when compared to the one that might have been caused on the ground.By discovering and constantly inventing boating and shipping, the navigation techniques were improved over time. Steering the boat has become easier and more and more complex boats and ships have been built. Sails and anchors are very important for the safety of a trip with the ship and which were both improved over time. As the dimensions of boats and ships increased, so did the ones of the anchors and sails. On the other hand, the materials from which boats and ships are made are now different from those that were used in the past. Yet, boats are still made of wood but also light metal in the case of large ships.

Boating and shipping have evolved in such a manner that nowadays luxurious and cruise ships are made, used primarily for traveling or cargo. Boats and ships are still used in wars, and in commerce.
